Supplementary WFD visualizations (S-WFD-V)

The S-WFD-V is a collection of supplementary data visualizations based on Water Framework Directive monitoring data (2001 – 2015) for 352 organic contaminants.

The S-WFD-V accompanies the publication “Water Quality and Ecological Risks in European Surface Waters – Monitoring Improves While Water Quality Declines” submitted to Environment International. Two drop-down menus can be used to select either Sankey-diagrams (left) or Chord-diagrams (right). Sankey-diagrams detail either chemical class specific detection frequencies or chemical risks expressed as AAC to RTL exceedances or MRAA to RTL exceedances ¹. Chord-diagrams depict chemical association networks of the 7 main chemical classes ² for the overall data (2001 – 2015) or for individual countries specifically.

¹ AAC to RTL exceedances represent if a specific chemical exceeded an organism threshold (i.e. aquatic invertebrates, fish, aquatic plants, and all organisms combined) in a specific location in a specific year. AACs do not account for the potential of chemicals co-occurring. MRAA to RTL exceedances represent if the most toxic chemical exceeded an organism threshold in a specific location in a specific year. Therefore, MRAAs account for the co-occurrence of chemicals, identifying the most ecotoxicologically relevant exposure per location and year.

² F = Fungicide, Ind = Industrial chemical, Ins = Insecticide, H = Herbicide, P = Plasticizer, S = solvent, O = Other (e.g., hormones, pharmaceuticals, anti-fouling agents, flame retardants, etc.)
